Meet the Earthworks Builders: a flash-based video game

Permission

This is a video game created to teach fourth through 8th graders and up about the earthworks, specifically, the Newark Earthworks. This is a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Procedures/Tasks

Please read the information on this page. If you give agree with what is written, please click below to take the survey. This assumes that you have already played the video game: Meet the Earthworks Builders online. This survey will ask a few questions to solicit your feedback and thoughts regarding this game.

Consent to participate

By completing this survey, you are granting your permission to participate in the research for playtesting the video game and any data collected about your game play will be used to improve the game. Your participation is voluntary. You can elect to stop your participation any time.

Risks and Benefits

There is no risk other than one typically encounters when using the internet and a computer. The benefit will be that you contribute to creating an educational game that will benefit those who play it.

Incentives

You will receive no compensation for your participation or contribution. Duration The time spent playing the game will depend upon how much time you decide to play it. This survey will take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Confidentiality

Although every effort to protect confidentiality will be made, no guarantee of internet survey security can be given as, although unlikely, transmissions can be intercepted and IP addresses can be identified. There is a small risk of a breach of confidentiality, but all efforts will be made to keep all information regarding your identity in the strictest confidentiality. I will not link your name to anything you say in the text of our reports or any publications or presentations.

Participant Rights

You may refuse to participate in this study without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. If you are a student or employee at Ohio State, your decision will not affect your grades or employment status. If you choose to participate in the study, you may discontinue participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits. By signing this form, you do not give up any personal legal rights you may have as a participant in this study. An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The Ohio State University reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research.
