BRIF PARAMETERS SURVEY

Introduction

Dear colleague,

On behalf of the international working group BRIF (Bioresource Research Impact Factor), we ask for your help in order to promote the recognition of the importance of biobanks for international research. You will find a short description of the aims of BRIF below.

While biobanking is on the increase worldwide, and generates wider scientific and economic activity, there is no standardised way to assess the use of bioresources. Additionally, it is becoming essential to properly recognise the amount of work it represents for researchers to set up a bioresource (notably biobanks), and give them higher credit for their effort to make them accessible. To address this, our team has introduced the concept of a Bioresource Research Impact factor (BRIF). The idea is to construct a quantitative tool to calculate the research impact of bioresources based on a metric (algorithm) and a unique digital resource identifier. Such a BRIF would make it possible to document: i/ the quantitative use of a bioresource, ii/ the quality and the importance of research results involving it, and iii/ the scientific and management efforts of researchers and institutions who have set up and made available a valid bioresource. This system could be used much more rationally than informal ‘reputation’ in the evaluation of bioresource activities over time. Also, if such factors were taken into account in assessing researchers/contributors’ professional results, it would increase the quality and sharing of bioresources.

My responsibility in the working group is related to the parameters for the evaluation of the scientific impact of research biobanks. Together with a group of colleagues we have set up a subgroup and have produced a questionnaire, which we need to test in a community of biobankers. The objective of this questionnaire is to identify the relevant metadata necessary to calculate a BRIF. Your answers will help us categorise parameters and calculate the weighting factors required for the algorithm. You can find further information on the “BRIF Parameters” subgroup at: http://www.gen2phen.org/wiki/brif-parameters

We are contacting you because the biobank you manage is part of a well-recognised national network of biobanks and you probably have the information we need to collect readily available. We are aware that biobankers are already involved in several surveys, but we are asking for your help because we feel that biobanks will benefit from an international standard able to recognise their role in biomedical research. We have tried to keep the questionnaire as short as possible (expected completion time 15-30 min), and to limit free text as much as possible. Please feel free to contact me in case you need further information, or in case you have comments.

On behalf of the BRIF working group, I thank you for your help.
