Cloze Test L2 Learners_short_version

Consent Letter

CONSENT FOR PARTICIPATION IN A RESEARCH PROJECT

This research is being conducted by Dr. Tania Ionin, an associate professor in the Department of Linguistics of the University of Illinois, and Tatiana Luchkina, a PhD student in Linguistics, with the assistance of undergraduate student Jessica Langer. This research investigates the interpretation of some English structures by native English speakers. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this study.

The goal of this research is to investigate how native Russian speakers and second language learners of Russian understand Russian words in and out of context. In this study, you will have to answer some general questions about your experience speaking/learning Russian, do two short tasks gauging your understanding of some structures and words in Russian and fill in blanks in a Russian text. Your responses will be saved by the testing software, which is used to present the questions for this study.

The questionnaire and the tasks will be presented on a computer screen. The task will ask you to read and/or listen to English sentences. You will complete the study via Amazon Mechanical Turk. After you complete this study, your responses will automatically be entered into an electronic database. When the study is complete, the results in the database will be analyzed and published. Your name and identity will not be included in the database nor in the published results. The researchers will keep the information you provide confidential. However, the service hosting this survey may have access to the data you submit and to the IP number of the computer on which you complete this test.  We cannot guarantee that this service will keep the information you submit confidential. You will not need to put your name on any of the test screens: you will be assigned a subject number to put in, instead.

The experiment will last about 30 minutes, during which you may pause at your convenience. You will be compensated with $3 for your participation.

There is no risk in participating in this research beyond that encountered in everyday life. Your participation will not benefit you directly, but we hope the results will help us gain a better understanding of how people comprehend language. We also hope that the results can ultimately be used to help improve methods for language teaching.
You are free to refuse to participate or to stop participating at any time with no penalty. If you decide to withdraw from the study before completing it, you will not receive any compensation.
