OBOE REED MAKING

Participant Information Statement

What is the study about?

The purpose of this study is to produce a better understanding of the current oboe reed making practices and attitudes held by tertiary student, freelancing and professional oboists in Australia and New Zealand. The results of this study will help to investigate what factors contribute to the production of a “good” oboe reed.

Who is carrying out the study?

The study is being conducted by Stephanie Cooper and will form the basis for the degree of Bachelor of Music in Performance (Honours) at The University of Sydney under the supervision of Dr Alan Maddox, Lecturer in Musicology.

What does the study involve?

Participation in this study involves completion of an online questionnaire, which will ask you questions about your music performance background and your opinions and approaches to reed making.  If you would like to be contacted for further information you can leave your contact details, but this is not necessary for completion of the online questionnaire.

How much time will the study take?

The questionnaire should take around 20 minutes to complete.

Can I withdraw from the study?

Being in this study is completely voluntary and you are not under any obligation to consent to complete the questionnaire. Submitting a completed questionnaire is an indication of your consent to participate in the study. You can withdraw any time prior to submitting your completed questionnaire. Once you have submitted your questionnaire anonymously, your responses cannot be withdrawn.  However you may withdraw your consent to be contacted for further information, even if this is given on the online questionnaire.

Will anyone else know the results?

All aspects of the study, including results, will be strictly confidential and only the researchers will have access to information on participants.  A report of the study may be submitted for publication, but individual participants will not be identifiable in such a report, without their explicit consent.

Will the study benefit me?

Possibly.  The findings on existing oboe reed making techniques may enlighten your own approach to reed making.

Can I tell other people about the study?

Yes!  If you know anybody who you think may be interested in participating in this study, you are welcome to share the website of the online survey with them:
