Consent Form

We are conducting a study investigating how various personal factors influence important intimate relationships. Matthew Branfield and Dr. Philip B. Gnilka of Kent State University are conducting the study, and the Kent State University Institutional Review Board has approved it. No deception is involved, and the study involves no more than minimal risk to participants (i.e., the level of risk encountered in daily life).

Participation in the study typically takes 15-20 minutes and is strictly anonymous.

Participants begin by answering a series of survey questions about themselves and how they perceive their relational satisfaction to be. All responses are treated as confidential, and in no case will responses from individual participants be identified. Rather, all data will be pooled and published in aggregate form only. Participants should be aware that the experiment is being run from a "secure" https server of the kind typically used to handle credit card transactions, so there is little possibility that responses could be viewed by unauthorized third parties (i.e., computer hackers). Since this is a confidential online survey, we will be using encryption and will not be collecting names or IP addresses.

In this study, you will not have any more risks than you would in a normal day of life. Participation in this study may benefit you personally. You may benefit from thinking about your own life and your relationship with your partner. Finally, what we learn from the study may help us to better understand how various personal factors influence intimate relationships.

Participation is voluntary; refusal to take part in the study involves no penalty or loss of benefits to which participants are otherwise entitled, and participants may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which they are otherwise entitled. Deciding to participate or not will not impact your grades/class standing/relationship to your institution.

If participants have further questions about this study or their rights, or if they wish to lodge a complaint or concern, they may contact the investigators, Mr. Branfield and Dr. Gnilka, at (330) 672-0693; or the Kent State University IRB, at (330) 672-2704.

You may print a copy of this consent form to keep at this time.
